The Trappers' Running Club is very aware of the prevelance of Type II diabetes throughout Labrador communities and feel that through running and other activities it can be prevented. Guy Poole is an excellent example of someone that has taken up this cause in a big way and will be walking toward Happy Valley - Goose Bay today through Sunday. If you can spare the time Guy would love for any and all to join him along the TLH for some walking! Read more about the walk below.

Guy Poole's Walk for Diabetes

ST. LEWIS, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR (September 1, 2010) – According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, today, more than 9 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes. Every hour of every day another 20 Canadians are diagnosed with the disease including those living in Newfoundland and Labrador. Guy Poole from St. Lewis (Fox Harbour) knows first hand how diabetes can affect you.

In memory of his wife of 43 years Elizabeth Poole, who was diagnosed with diabetes in the 1970's and succumbed to the disease in 2004, Guy Poole has since been spreading awareness and helping to raise funds for the Canadian Diabetes Association. Guy has organized four walks since 2004 in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and will be organizing another that will begin on September 1.

To date, the walks have raised over $13,000 in support of the Canadian Diabetes Association. This year being the fifth year, the walk will begin 150km south of Goose Bay to Goose Bay. The walk should take 5-7 days to complete.

The community can participate in many ways. Donations can be made at the actual walk, individuals can also walk with Guy or plan their own walk. To donate or for further questions, individuals can call and leave a message for Guy Poole's nephew Doug Mesher at (709) 486-5469
