History
Welcome to our Days of Old page. One of the objectives of the Trappers' Running Club is to promote the unique heritage of the race site location and there are really two angles of this history we focus on.

The first is the rich trapping history. The starting point community of North West River is rich with heritage and has a diverse mix of cultures: Innu, Inuit, Inuit Metis and Settlers. The area was once home to the historic Hudson's Bay Company. As you make your way toward Happy Valley - Goose Bay, you'll be progressing inland in the direction of what the trappers referred to as the 'Height of Land'. The web site and activities at the marathon incorporate aspects of this heritage to keep the memories alive and the tourist experience more unique.

The second angle we focus on, is the modern history surrounding the Goose Bay Air Base that has transformed the region from a subsistence and trapping economy to a wage labour economy. Construction started during the Second World War in 1941 and by 1942, a remote frontier was suddenly home to the largest airfield in the Western Hemisphere! Starting at kilometer 30 of the Trapline Marathon you will start to approach sites associated with the airbase and between kilometers 36 and 39, you be running adjacent to the airfield as you approach Happy Valley!
